Is Your Baby Crying Excessively?
Colic, Gas & Tummy Discomfort Explained By Expert Paediatrician and Newborn Expert
If your baby cries for long periods, pulls legs to the tummy, or seems uncomfortable after feeds — you are not alone. Most babies experience digestive discomfort, but knowing what is normal and when to worry makes all the difference.
Many parents worry:
“My baby cries every evening”
“Gas drops aren’t helping”
“Is this colic or something serious?”
“Everyone is giving different advice”
As a UK-trained neonatologist, I want to reassure you — most crying is benign, but some signs should never be ignored.
WHAT IS COLIC?
Infant colic is defined as:
Crying for more than 3 hours a day
On more than 3 days a week
In an otherwise healthy baby
It usually begins at 2–3 weeks, peaks around 6–8 weeks, and settles by 3–4 months.
Common features:
Baby draws knees to chest
Red face, clenched fists
Crying worse in evenings
Feeds normally in between
Knowing Why Helps You Help Your Baby
Colic and gas occur because:
- The baby’s gut is still immature
- Swallowing air during feeds
- Oversupply or fast milk flow
- Overstimulation
- Cow’s milk protein sensitivity (in some babies)
🚫 It is not caused by poor parenting
🚫 It is not because breastmilk is not enough
